Winter Skin Woes
Today, we’re chatting about a problem many of us face as the temperature drops… our winter skin woes.
When the air outside is cold and dry, the water in your skin evaporates more quickly says Marvice, Master Skin Therapist, leaving it feeling dry and tight and looking flaky and chapped.
But don’t worry. Here are my top tips and product recommendations to keep you glowing all winter long.
Tweaks and treats for your winter skincare:
Sun’s out, sunscreen’s on
UV rays don’t take a winter break. Neither should your sunscreen.
While there is less UVB around in winter, levels of UVA are still significant enough to age our skin. That’s why I always recommend using a high UVA rating sunscreen all year round. A personal favourite of mine is ELTA MD UV Daily SPF 40 with hyaluronic acid as a hydrating ingredient to keep the skin hydrated and plump, giving broad-spectrum protection, it’s perfect for everyday use in the cold months.
Daily Skincare Routine Adjustments
#1. Cleansing
Swap your regular cleanser for a milder, hydrating variant. Diego dalla Palma Professional Micellar Cleansing Milk is a brilliant option because it can gently remove makeup for the face and eye area and cleanse the face effectively.
#2. Exfoliation
Opt for gentler scrubs or acid exfoliants to avoid over-exfoliating which strips your skin of natural oils, exacerbating dryness. Diego dalla Palma Professional Sauna Scrub is my top pick for a gentle yet effective exfoliation.
#3. Moisturizing
Shift to richer, cream-based moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides that lock in moisture. I’m all about Diego dalla Palma Professional 24 Hour Hydro Replenishing Cream at the moment. Why? It contains HYALU4PLUMP, Vitamin E, and precious oils such as Argan Oil, Babassu Oil, Acai Oils, Crambe Oil which is cold-pressed and organic.
Ditch the heat. Embrace the treat.
I know it’s tempting to jump into a hot tub for a languid soak after a chilly day, but this can strip your skin of its natural oils.
And just because your skin is covered up in winter clothing don’t skip to moisturize even if your arms and legs aren’t on display. Dry skin can get itchy, flaky, and uncomfortable if you don’t use the right lotion.
Apply a rich body lotion immediately after showering to lock in moisture. Apply again before going outside and before going to bed.
H2-Oh so good
Step up your water intake. You lose water through your skin every day – even when it’s cold. This is especially true if you spend a lot of time in dry indoor heat.
Our bodies are made of 70% water, which keeps our cells plump and healthy. If you’re not drinking enough, your body and your skin soon gets dehydrated.
Professional winter help
Winter skin can often be dull, so I recommend a professional facial about every four weeks. That’s how long it takes your skin to move through the full life cycle of skin cell growth.
Regular facials will help keep your skin clean, clear and hydrated while maxing out your everyday skincare routine.
Ask your therapist to recommend an exfoliating peel too. Sloughing off dead skin allows better absorption of active skincare products.
Don’t forget your lips…
Avoid licking your lips and opt for a rich lip ointment or butter, jane iredale Lip Drink Lip Balm gives long-lasting moisture and protection and has a SPF 15
Some matte or long-wearing lipsticks can also leave your lips dry, chapped, and cracked while plumping lip glosses can contain irritating ingredients that make matters worse. So use sparingly if you find them drying.
