What are essential oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. It takes a huge amount of plant material to make them – about 250 kilograms of lavender flowers are needed to produce just one kilogram of lavender essential oil.
“Aromatherapy lets you tap into nature’s healing powers,” says Marvice. Whether it’s the calming scent of lavender or the energizing kick of peppermint, each oil has its own unique properties that can help calm your mind, lower stress, or even improve your skin and hair.

How aromatherapy works
When you inhale essential oils, they stimulate the limbic system. This is the part of the brain that controls emotions, memory, and even your heart rate.
But that’s not all. Many essential oils can be applied to your skin, providing powerful benefits. Just don’t apply them directly to your skin, cautions Marvice. Always use a carrier oil and do a patch test first.

Lavender: Helps reduce stress and aids sleep. Perfect for winding down after a long day.
Rose Geranium: Balances dry or oily skin, leaving it fresh and glowing.
Tea Tree: A natural antiseptic that helps keep skin clear and blemish-free.
Peppermint: Known for supporting digestion and for its anti-inflammatory powers.
Neroli: Extracted from bitter orange flowers, it can help lower blood pressure and ease menopausal symptoms.
Ylang-Ylang: An intensely sweet, floral oil with super relaxing properties.
Frankincense: Often called ‘the king of oils’ this woody, earthy oil can improve mood and sleep.
Bergamot: The fruity, citrusy aroma behind Earl Grey tea. Perfect for lifting mood and easing anxiety.
Rosemary: May encourage hair growth, boost memory and support the circulatory and nervous systems.
Lemon: Reduces anxiety and depression. Who doesn’t love a fresh citrus vibe? Just be careful – lemon oil can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so avoid direct exposure after using it.
